RENEW: Spiritual Renewal for the 21st Century /
RENACER: Renovación Espiritual para el Siglo 21

Available in both Spanish and English, RENEW is a three-year, parish-centered process of spiritual renewal and evangelization, given heavy diocesan testing and now in use across the country. Using small communities of faith that may meet either in private homes or the church, the program enables people to develop a closer relationship with Christ, grow in community, and reach out in service to others.

Basic Structure: The Five Seasons of RENEW

RENEW embraces five seasons, each consisting of six weeks. There are overall themes for each season, then weekly themes experienced in the Sunday liturgy, in materials for family use, in personal meditation booklets, and in small communities.

Season I: God, A Community of Love (October/November)
Season II: Conversion (gospel readings from Cycle A—Lent)
Season III: Reaching Out – Through Evangelization (October/November)
Season IV: Reconciliation (gospel readings from Cycle A—Lent)
Season V: Renewing for the 21st Century (October/November)

Materials

The following materials comprise the main components of the RENEW Parish Package and have proven to be an invaluable asset to pastor, pastoral staff, the parish’s core community, and other RENEW leaders as they prepare to lead the parish through the process of renewal. Not every resource here is needed to create a successful program in your parish. The two Faith-Sharing Booklets and/or the Lectionary-Based Booklets at the beginning of this list are the minimum materials needed, one each per participant. The other materials—written for group leaders, the Core Community, and so on—are supplementary titles to help enhance the RENEW experience.

Faith Sharing Booklet A
One for each season, this contains weekly reflections on the Word of God and the RENEW season themes.

Faith Sharing Booklet B
One for each season, this is for young adults who may be new to the spiritual journey or who want to begin with a simpler approach.

Lectionary-Based Booklet
There are five booklets, one for each RENEW season. Seasons I, III, and V use the Lectionary for the A, B, and C cycles. Seasons II and IV follow the Lectionary for Cycle A, traditional for Lent and RCIA programs. The Lectionary-based booklet contains weekly reflections on the Sunday readings and the RENEW season themes.

Leadership Book
This is used primarily by the Core Community and other RENEW leadership groups. It explains the RENEW process and the preparation needed to ensure successful implementation. It contains ministry descriptions, responsibilities, and timelines for each season.

Core Community Handbook
It details formation sessions to allow the Core Community to grow into a strong faith community. It provides a foundation for a permanent parish core community that will encourage ongoing small community development.

Small Christian Communities: A Vision of Hope for the 21st Century
This book provides a comprehensive explanation of the vision of small communities as a style of parish life for this new century.

Invitational Ministry Handbook
This is a valuable resource to parishes that wish to become evangelizing communities through home and personal visits or telephone calls.

Mission Handbook
This resource offers concrete schedules, prayers, and sample talks to implement an exciting parish mission to initiate the RENEW process in the parish.

Liturgy Preparation Handbooks
In a set of five, one for each season, each handbook outlines tools for preparing liturgies during the six weeks of each season. These include Sunday Eucharist preparation process, commentaries, and ritual and music ideas.

Daily Meditation Booklets
These small booklets for each season contain daily scripture reflections. This is ideal for personal use by those who are housebound, in the hospital, or for people who travel.
